Video Comment: My Bizarre Speeding Ticket
Today I was stopped for what I believe is an extraordinary speeding ticket today.
I was traveling up a busy highway, keeping up with traffic, going at about 60mph.
A state trooper passed me, going down the same busy highway at about 60mph.
The stretch of highway that we were on had extremely sharp turns, and both I and the officer were going around one of these turns at these speeds.
So he passes me, he stops in the middle of this busy highway (hwy 395 in Spokane), and turns around in front of other on-coming cars.
He flips on his lights, I find a safe place to pull over, and he approaches. I ask him what I can do for him. He says “you were going a little fast, 70mph in a 50mph zone”.
I didn’t dispute this, because I wasn’t paying attention to my speed. I just said “I didn’t realize that”.
I was a little curious why he stated that the speed was 50mph, because it was clearly 60mph.
But I didn’t want to argue with him. So he went back, wrote me the ticket, I was nervous to see the results based on his claim that I was in a 50mph zone. He gave me a ticket for 20mph over.
I asked him, “how did you determine my speed”. He said “I clocked you on radar”. I said “while you were driving”, and he said “yes”.
I thought that was a little dangerous, and I calmly said “that seems a little dangerous”. He laughed, and gave me the ticekt, and went back to his car.
I feel that even if I was breaking the speed limit, that this guy truly went beyond duty and beyond safety to issue me a ticket for a minor infraction. So I have requested the information via the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act), asking for the calibration and maintenance details of the radar and the logs from that day, as well as the video of the citation from the dashcam.
We shall see what comes of this. The request that I sent in is below:
