Corporate Media - the impact on democracy

by Captain Pirate on Mar.20, 2007, under Archives

If a key indicator of the health of a democracy is the state of its journalism, the United States is in deep trouble. In Rich Media, Poor Democracy, Robert McChesney lays the blame for this state of affairs squarely at the doors of the corporate boardrooms of big media, which far from delivering on their promises of more choice and more diversity, have organized a system characterized by a lack of competition, homogenization of opinion and formulaic programming.

Through numerous examples this video demonstrates how journalism has been compromised by the corporate bosses of conglomerates such as Disney, Sony, Viacom, News Corp, and AOL Time Warner to produce a system of news that is high on sensationalism and low on information. They suggest that unless citizen activism can reclaim the commons, this new corporate system will be characterized by a rich media and an ever impoverished, poor democracy.

After watching the movie Borat, I found some things that I strongly relate to that many may not connect with.  But I thought I would share my thoughts on Borat’s racism.

03/11/2007 Shut up and Sing!!!

by Captain Pirate on Mar.12, 2007, under Archives

Shut Up and Sing a documentary of the Dixie Chicks and their struggle to regain their careers after excercising their free speech in London.

I have been commenting on this for over a year now, and I have been against the war since it began, even when it wasn’t popular to be against the war.

I can also relate to the Dixie Chicks for being shunned on other occassions by excersizing speech.

In this broadcast I comment on X96 playing the Dixie Chicks in June 2006, and about the awesome documentary that the Dixie Chicks put together titled “Shut Up and Sing”.

03/10/2007 Teen Suicide in Utah

by Captain Pirate on Mar.10, 2007, under Archives

This morning I spoke about teen-suicide, a subject close to my heart.  I was reading an article on KSL news about “Utah Leads the Nation in Prescription Drug Abuse”, and then  I did some more research on the subject.  I came up with a great article that I googled from MormonStories.org that gave some of the information that I had been looking for since 2002.  I commented on some of the information and then I gave my own story and advice on the matter.

Disclaimer, I am no doctor and I am no one qualified to give advice.  For any couciling see a qualified physician what I stated this morning was only my opinion.

Utah Leads Nation in Prescription Drug Abuse

by Captain Pirate on Mar.08, 2007, under Archives

I got this from KSL.com:  http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=954866

I have posted about it several times in the past, and commented about statements that the Head of the Utah Psyciatric Association Dr. Curt Canning has said about it as well as reports in 2000 from CBS news about national studies on the issue.

My brother O.Ded on prescrition medication and I have known dozens of kids and some adults whom I have personally been aqquainted with that have lost their lives due to prescription drug use and/or abuse in Utah.

Utah boasts of low illicit drug abuse.  But on the contrary many of the people abusing prescription drugs have obtained them illegally and there is an epidemic going on in Utah with prescription drug over-usage and prescription drug related deaths.

Its time to admit that we have a problem and deal with it as Utahans.  It’s been swept under the carpet for way too long.

On KSL Nightside

by Captain Pirate on Mar.08, 2007, under Archives

I was finally able to talk to Rocky Anderson!  I have been wanting to give him my opinion on the Main Street Plaza issue and how I disapproved of Mayor Anderson not enforcing the easement.

While I disagreed with Mayor Anderson on that topic, I am very supportive of Mayor Anderson’s grass roots stands and his future of pursueing more grassroots political movements.

I agree that President Bush pursued an illegal war, and lied to the public to put our troops on the ground in Iraq.  I agree that the reasons for us going to Iraq never materialized, such as a nuclear weapons program, or WMD weapons programs in other types.

I believe that President Bush has put the U.S. in greater danger than before we invaded Iraq too.

My opinion is that we should exit Iraq, and start making amends with our enemies and allys.  Atleast that is what I would like to see.

But I do believe to make a statement to the world, we should impeach or repremend our president for his errors.   He is an employee, a public servant of this country.  He answers to nearly 300 million people as we are his employers.  The American people disapprove of his job performance.   Most people would be fired for such a mistake.

Anyway, good job Rocky!!!
