Report says Utah most depressed state in U.S.

By Kirsten Stewart
The Salt Lake Tribune

Utah is the most depressed state in the country, according to a national analysis released Wednesday by mental health care advocates who urge better access to care.
The report card by Mental Health America was funded by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and draws together federal health data from all states and the District of Columbia. It ranked Utah highest for its “depression status” based on national surveys conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
In 2004 and 2005, slightly more than 10 percent of adults and adolescents in Utah reported they had a major depressive episode.
In 2004, Utah reported 377 deaths by suicide. That number, adjusted for age and population, ranked it eighth worst in the nation, the report said. An average of 315 Utahns die by suicide each year.
Utah launched a five-year suicide prevention plan in May, an effort that focuses on raising awareness through ads and providing support groups.
Lawmakers last year also invested $2.7 million to treat mentally ill Utahns who are too poor to afford health insurance but earn too much to qualify for Medicaid.
But the report suggests more can be done to improve access to care, noting that barriers to treatment are “significantly associated” with high rates of depression.
The cost of care doesn’t appear to be a problem in Utah, with near average per capita spending on mental health.
But Utah has the highest percentage of people reporting unmet mental health needs, according to the federal surveys. The state also ranks the seventh worst for its shortage of outpatient clinics, and ninth worst for its shortage of psychiatrists.
Mental Health America, formerly known as the National Mental Health Association, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people live mentally healthier lives.

by Captain Pirate on Nov.29, 2007, under WebCasts

Worst attack on US citizens in the US prior to 9/11/2001 (WTC attack).

Mormon militia commanded by John D. Lee (an adopted son of Brigham Young the early Mormon prophet who settled Utah), killed approximately 140 settlers in cold blood. Among the victims were many women and children. All victims were unarmed when killed by the Mormon attackers.

F*%&ing pedophiles!

by Captain Pirate on Nov.23, 2007, under WebCasts

I watched the day time talk shows today with my grandma. I was disturbed to see that the website pedophile freak that is in my home state on there acting like what he is doing isn’t wrong. He is the guy that made the website that gives tips to other pedophiles.

That he has the right to produce content for his website is not my issue. I think free speech protects him to a point. There are laws to protect us against pornography, and child porn. But the text is protected as far as it is not being lude.

I think it is important to protect EVERYONE’s free speech, because when we start limiting people’s free speech then that gives the powers that be a free ticket to find other people’s free speech invalid.

My issue is not to take his free speech away. However, if I ever find this F&%k head looking at my children, I will take it upon myself to blind this asshole. There is no way that I would ever let this freak violate my child, not even with his eyes.

I am not an advocate of violence, and I don’t advocate violating anyone’s rights. But I think that I would personally have little control of my reaction if I caught this dude looking at my child.

God help me if I bump into this dude!!

Choosing Faith - Brian Welch quits Korn and kicks drugs

by Captain Pirate on Nov.23, 2007, under WebCasts

Brian “Head” Welch, former lead-guitarist for Korn, a controversial nu-metal band, is now a Christian and no longer does drugs (meth) and alcohol. He says in this interview on Fox News that he has found God.

Amazon.com says this in an Editorial Review of his book, “Save Me from Myself: How I Found God, Quit Korn, Kicked Drugs, and Lived to Tell My Story”:

In February 2005, more than 10,000 people in Bakersfield, California, watched as Brian “Head” Welch–the former lead guitarist of the controversial Nu–metal band Korn–was saved by Jesus Christ. The event set off a media frenzy as observers from around the world sought to understand what led this rock star out of the darkness and into the light.

Now, in this courageous memoir, Head talks for the first time about his shocking embrace of God and the tumultuous decade that led him into the arms of Jesus Christ. Taking the reader backstage with Korn, Head tells the inside story of life in the band and how his rock star lifestyle resulted in an all–consuming addiction to methamphetamines. Head writes openly about the tour bus mayhem of Ozzfest and The Family Values tour, while providing a candid look at how the routine of recording and traveling placed him in a cycle of addiction that he could not break on his own.

Speaking honestly about his addiction, Head details his struggles with the drug that ultimately led him to seek a higher power. Despite his numerous attempts to free himself from his addiction, nothing–not even the birth of his daughter–could spur him to kick meth for good. Here he addresses how, with the help of God, he emerged from his dangerous lifestyle and found a path that was not only right for his daughter, it was right for him. In addition, he discusses the chaotic end to his time in Korn, and how his newfound faith has changed his perspective on his past.

Abusive cop limits free speech, gets sued and loses!

by Captain Pirate on Nov.22, 2007, under WebCasts

HIT: Free Speech

Salt Lake City residents may not have free-speech rights in every public plaza downtown, but the First Amendment still holds sway at the Utah Capitol. So said the Utah Attorney General’s Office in settling a lawsuit brought by two animal-rights activists who claimed a Utah Highway Patrol trooper stopped them from handing out leaflets near the House of Representatives during this year’s legislative session. To settle, the state will make a donation of $500 to the Utah Animal Rights Coalition, pay $100 each to the two leafleting activists and fork over $10,000 to their attorney. Even animal-rights activists “have the legal right to engage in the free expression activity of tendering political leaflets,” the AG wrote. Who knew?

Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) tasers a man in front of pregant wife

by Captain Pirate on Nov.22, 2007, under WebCasts

This man turned around like the cop asked him to, maybe not as fast as the cop would have liked him too, and then this cop tasered him. The reason that the cop gave “because you wouldn’t sign the ticket”. Not a very good reason IMHO.

I haven’t met a great deal of respectable Utah cops. This is John D. Lee style of policing!
